Athol Forestry Cooperative Limited
Athol Forestry Cooperative Limited (Athol), established in 1977, is a co-operative of independent woodlot owners, with holdings located in northwestern Nova Scotia. Athol employs a staff of dedicated forestry professionals who work on behalf of the members to manage and protect the many values of their woodlots. With membership exceeding 250 landowners, Athol currently manages in excess of 45,000 acres.
Athol provides a wide array of forestry services to landowners including woodlot management plans, forest improvement services (planting, thinning, harvesting, etc.) and consulting services such as woodlot assessments, timber marketing and scaling of forest products. We also perform GPS field measuring services for the purposes of mapping and identification of land areas, such as forestry/blueberry, etc.
Our retail store, located at our office in Amherst, caters to the needs of our landowners and the public providing a local source for forestry and safety supplies, culverts, flagging, etc.

Highlights of the 30th. Annual General Meeting
The 30th. Annual General Meeting of Athol Forestry Cooperative Limited was held on July 17, 2007 at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill.
The following presentations were made:
Special Anniversary Award - Morris Haugg presented a plaque to Marjorie Hoeg, honouring the Late Roy A. Hoeg, founding Chairman and Manager of the Co-Op. Mr. Haugg paid a fitting tribute to Mr. Hoegs accomplishments over his lifetime and his contributions to the formation of the Co-Op and to the community in which he lived.
Exemplary Member Award - Morris Haugg presented Wilson and Shelia Moore with the Exemplary Member Award, noting that they were selected because they met all the criteria outlined in the nominating papers, as well as being nominated by two people.
Presentations to Out-Going Board Members - Gerald Read presented Keith Hunter and Morris Haugg with a gift to acknowledge their contribution to the Board of Directors. Mr. Read noted that collectively the two members had served a total of 33 years on the Board. They will be missed.
Presentation by Harry Thurston - Shelagh Rayworth welcomed renowned author Harry Thurston who presented an oveview of the proposed Chignecto Wilderness area. A question and answer period followed.
The highlights of the business meeting were:
- Presentation of Audited Financial Statements by Susan McIsaac
- Nomination and approval of three Board members, Gerald Read, Ira Smith and Donald Donkin
- Announced winners of Silent Auction items - $711 was raised for the Athol Scholarship Fund, the largest amount ever raised.
The meeting closed at 9:45 with acknowledgements to those members, contractors and suppliers who made donations of items for the silent auction as well as tote bags and frames for the member packages. An enjoyable evening was had by all! Hope to see you next year.
