Husqvarna Axes by Wetterling
I
thought I’d stop in the middle of planning this year’s silviculture
program and write a quick review of a line of axes we carry in our store
that I have some experience with by Husqvarna. They are made by
Wetterlings of Sweden and stamped by Husqvarna, a small company that has
been in business since the 1880’s making premium, hand forged axes on a
forge press. The axes offered range from small camping or belt axes up
to splitting and hewing axes. All are forged from premium Swedish steel
resulting in an axe that will hold an edge you can shave with! Trust me,
I’ve tried it! With that level of sharpness, remember safety is your
number one priority when using it. They will also make surgical like
cuts in your shins if you’re careless, also from experience.
The axe
I personally use is their Carpenter’s axe. I re-blaze up to 15 km’s of
boundary lines every fall on member’s woodlots, as time and dividends
allow. The broad, flat face of the carpenter’s axe is ideal for making
wide and shallow faces on trees to hold lots of log marking paint. The
sharper the axe, the less work it is to make those faces and a harder
steel holds that edge through repeated sessions over the course of a
season without having to re-sharpen as often as a cheaper axe.
It is
also a good multipurpose axe, not ideal for every job, but I’ve used it
for carving, splitting kindling and cutting wood for a campfire. It has
also come in handy for helping field dress deer on the odd occasion.
It
is made with an American Hickory handle that has been carefully
selected for grain straightness and strength. Cheaper axes use White
ash, which is good, but isn’t as resistant to breakage. Cheaper axes
often don’t pay attention to grain either, which can lead to breaking
across weak grain, not a good situation when you’re in mid swing.
We
carry several different styles in the store, but if you don’t see one,
we can often order one and have it within a few days. The splitter in
stock has great balance and a leather edge guard. We also carry their
brush axes which are a favorite for many of our woodlot owners if you
are clearing trails or boundary lines. They have reversible blades for
quick changes in the field, and replacements can be had economically.
So when you are out shopping for a new axe, come check out our line of Husqvarna axes, you’ll be glad you did!
Happy Chopping!
